When to file your ISF

Your ISF needs to be filed 24 to 48 hours before loading. You can file as soon as your seller gives you the ISF information, and the earlier the better.

Why it matters

The Importer Security Filing, also called ISF 10+2, is required for all goods imported into the U.S. by ocean vessel. It lets U.S. Customs and Border Protection pre-screen shipments before they arrive, to identify high-risk cargo, prevent smuggling and keep cargo safe and secure. Not complying can mean monetary penalties, more inspections and delayed cargo.

The ISF is made up of 10 data elements and is separate from the AMS data the steamship lines file with U.S. Customs. A few items may be updated in transit, but the U.S. importer is responsible for making sure filings are timely and correct. We work with our overseas agents and partners to file your ISF properly, protecting you from a possible $5,000 penalty for failing to file or filing incorrectly.

• A customs power of attorney
• A non-refundable customs bond. Annual customs bond holders don’t need a separate bond for ISF: see continuous bonds
